PELICAN LIGHTS URGENTLY NEEDED

In view of the latest ADT Notification that St Paul’s Bay Bypass will be closed for traffic because of reconstruction purposes and the ‘urging’ of the same traffic Authority to the motorist to use the roads leading to Ghajn Tuffieha to arrive at St Paul’s Bay passing through Zebbiegh l/o Mgarr, the Mgarr Local Council would like to urge the said Authority to Install a Pelican lights system at Sir Temi Zammit Street Zebbiegh (exactly where a pedestrian crossing already exists) in order to facilitate the safe crossing of our locals in this busy road which has for the past years proved to be very busy and extremely dangerous to cross.

Suffice to say that the Mgarr local council has since 2004 been requesting such system both verbally during meetings with the Director for Traffic Management and the then CEO followed by correspondence. For good orders sake we would like to highlight the fact that these pelican lights had been approved way back 3rd September 2004 (two and a half years ago!) in fact the Network Infrastructure Directorate had been delegated by the Director for Traffic Management, to coordinate the necessary works for the pelican lights’ installation. Whilst we regret to have had to go public on this issue, we ‘urge’ the ADT that it is now high time that such a system be installed before God forbids some accident occurs.
